Reading the Four Swap Fields, Line by Line · FxPro South Africa
A swap (or rollover) is the interest debited or credited when you hold a leveraged position overnight.
Open FxPro Account →A swap is the interest debited or credited for holding a leveraged FxPro position past the daily rollover, and on screen it is not one entry but four: Swap type, Swap long, Swap short and the three-day swap. Read them in the wrong order and the number will not make sense — Swap type comes first, because it states the unit the other two are counted in, usually points rather than account money. Swap long and Swap short are rates per standard lot per night, one for each direction, and only the direction you took is ever applied. The three-day entry names a weekday rather than a size: Wednesday night carries the weekend value date, so the charge counts three times. Everything else you meet — rollover, storage, overnight financing, carry — is one of those entries under another label, and a swap-free account for eligible clients holds none of them. Treat the page as a lookup: find the entry you are staring at, read what it states and where its value is set.
Measured swap rates (Raw+)
| Instrument | Long — per lot / night | Short — per lot / night | Long carry / yr | Short carry / yr |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EUR/USD | −$8.90 (-8.9 pts) | +$1.90 (1.9 pts) | −2.8% | +0.6% |
| GBP/USD | −$3.10 (-3.1 pts) | −$4.20 (-4.2 pts) | −0.84% | −1.13% |
| AUD/USD | −$1.95 (-1.95 pts) | −$2.90 (-2.9 pts) | −0.99% | −1.48% |
| USD/CAD | +$1.62 (2.25 pts) | −$5.84 (-8.1 pts) | +0.59% | −2.13% |
| USD/JPY | +$4.49 (6.9 pts) | −$18.20 (-27.95 pts) | +1.64% | −6.64% |
| XAU/USD (Gold) | −$67.90 (-67.9 pts) | +$27.00 (27 pts) | −5.7% | +2.27% |
What you are debited (−) or credited (+) per standard lot held past the daily rollover, measured on FxPro’s own MT5 Raw+ feed (with the raw points in brackets). A negative number costs you to hold; a positive one pays you. Triple swap is applied on Wednesday night to cover the weekend value date. Carry / yr is the annualised swap yield (swap × 365 ÷ notional at the live price) — a rough guide to what holding the position costs or earns over a year, shown where we have a live price. What it really costs to hold a position (measured)
| Instrument | Long 1d | Long 1w | Long 1mo | Short 1d | Short 1w | Short 1mo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EUR/USD | $17.90 | $71.30 | $276.00 | $7.10 | −$4.30 | −$48.00 |
| GBP/USD | $16.10 | $34.70 | $106.00 | $17.20 | $42.40 | $139.00 |
| AUD/USD | $12.95 | $24.65 | $69.50 | $13.90 | $31.30 | $98.00 |
| USD/CAD | $8.26 | −$1.46 | −$38.72 | $15.72 | $50.76 | $185.08 |
| USD/JPY | $4.46 | −$22.48 | −$125.75 | $27.15 | $136.35 | $554.95 |
| XAU/USD (Gold) | $89.90 | $497.30 | $2,059.00 | −$5.00 | −$167.00 | −$788.00 |
Total net cost to hold one standard lot over time — the spread plus accumulated swap. A positive figure is what it costs you; a negative one means you come out ahead (positive carry). For example, holding EUR/USD long for a month costs about $276, while a EUR/USD short earns about $48. Based on measured spreads and current swaps — rates vary.
Swap at a glance
- Charged only on positions held past the daily rollover (around server 00:00)
- Rate depends on the instrument and whether you are long or short
- Triple swap on Wednesday nights (covers the weekend value date)
- Swap-free (Islamic) accounts hold no swap for eligible clients
- See the exact long and short swap per instrument inside your platform
Avoiding swaps
If you hold positions overnight regularly, a swap-free (Islamic) account may avoid swap interest for eligible clients. Check live swap rates inside your platform before holding overnight.
Open FxPro Account →The four entries, and the order to read them in
Swap type. States the unit, and therefore has to be read first. A swap quoted in points is a number of price increments; a swap quoted in account money is already cash. The same digits mean two different things depending on which of those this entry says, and every argument about swap figures that goes nowhere started by skipping it.
Swap long and Swap short. Two rates for one instrument, one per direction, both quoted per standard lot for one night. They are set independently of each other, so reading one tells you nothing reliable about the other; look up the one that matches the side you are on.
Three-day swap. Not a multiplier of your size and not an option — it names a weekday. At FxPro it is Wednesday, because the value date rolled over that night carries the weekend with it.
Rates, and what they are counted per
The denominators. Every published swap figure comes with two of them attached: per standard lot, and per night. Strip either one away and the figure stops meaning anything, which is why the measured table above states both in its heading rather than leaving them to be assumed.
When the entry is used at all. Only when a position is still open past the daily rollover. A position opened and closed inside one trading day never reaches these entries, which is why a cost estimate for short-term trading has nothing to take from this page and everything to take from the spread and commission page.
Carry. The annualised restatement of the same rate, printed as a percentage so that instruments can be lined up on one scale. It is the same entry stretched over a year, not a second charge sitting alongside it.
One entry, several labels
Swap, rollover, storage, overnight financing. Four names for the interest applied to a position that survives the rollover. Which one you meet depends on the platform and on the paperwork, not on how the charge is worked out.
Rollover as a moment. The same word also names the point in the trading day when the charge is applied. Read from context: a rollover you can be charged is money, a rollover you can be open past is a time.
What none of the labels tell you. None of them says whether the figure will be there tomorrow. Swap rates follow interest rates, so a rate looked up last month is a memory rather than a quote — the measured table above prints the date it was last read for exactly that reason.
Swap entries, one line each
| Entry | What it states | Set by | What to do with it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swap type | The unit the swap figures are counted in | The instrument specification | Read it before the numbers, or the numbers mislead |
| Swap long | The rate for a buy position held overnight | The specification, per direction | Apply it only if you are long |
| Swap short | The rate for a sell position held overnight | The specification, per direction | Apply it only if you are short |
| Three-day swap | The weekday the charge counts three times | The weekend value date | Expect Wednesday night to read differently |
| Rollover | The daily point a position must still be open past | A fixed point in the trading day | A position closed before it is never charged |
| Carry | The same rate restated for a year | Our measured table | Use it to compare instruments, not to budget one night |
The rates themselves sit in the measured table above and are reread daily. This list explains the labels, not the values.

What traders report
No reviewer quotes a swap number, so these two comments cannot tell you what a night of holding costs — the measured table above does that. What they add is context: one trader carried short GBP/USD and EUR/USD from November and did not find the charge punishing, and one swing trader says he was on a swap-free Islamic account, so it never reached him.
FxPro doesn't charge high swap commissions. I've been holding short positions on gbpusd and eurusd since november.
I'm a swing trader, so for me the spreads is just nice and acceptable with 0 commission, they offer Islamic swap free.
